A letter from VVNA President Craig Zehms

Dear Neighbors,

I walked down to the river last night to see the Twin Pillars of Light which appear every year on 9/11. It’s become a tradition for me. The simplicity of the memorial is breathtaking and profound. What does light symbolize in your lives? To me light is hope. And in my naive midwestern way I believe that it is always with us. It is eternal.

Kindness and good deeds fall into the same category. The large number of people that came to the park to honor Jeffrey Schwind at his memorial gathering was wonderful. Isn’t it reassuring to know that one person’s dedication an inspire so many of us? Jeff’s presence remains in the park. May we all continue to remember the example that he set, his great wit, and his gift for friendship.

Besides Halloween, one of his favorite events was Disco in the Park. So let’s dance up a storm in his honor on Oct. 14th!

With the Friends of Van Vorst Park and the Barrow Mansion, we are working on all sorts of activities for the fall season. We look forward to seeing you and are always eager or volunteer help.

“Sheboyhood” Returns to the Barrow on 11/4!

Craig Zehms’ tales of growing up in Sheboygan, Wisconsin played to a standing room only crowd on March 25th. He will be performing his solo show again, as a fundraiser for the Barrow, on November 4th. He has added images and written several more stories about his adventures in the Land of Cheese.

Tickets will be available on Eventbrite (stay tuned) and at the door.

Interested in meeting new neighbors and sharing what you love about VVNA? Help us expand our membership Saturdays at Van Vorst Park from 10-12. Duties include: setting up a small table & banner, handing out flyers, answering questions about VVNA, and signing folks up for our newsletter! You don’t have to know everything to volunteer; Emily, our VVNA secretary, will be there to support you.
