A Note from Sustainable JC Founder & Chair, Debra A. Italiano Thursday May 11th is #HudsonGives — an annual day of generosity and fundraising for Hudson County non-profits and I’m raising funds for SJC along with our board and core team towards Jersey City’s Tree Canopy Restoration efforts. Thanks to the generosity of our donors during #HudsonGives 2022, we were able to serve 271 trees and collect 1,950 lbs of trash across Jersey City's Greenville, Heights, Journal Square and West Side neighborhoods — groundbreaking results for our pilot campaign!
As part of SJC’s TTAC, our volunteers, supported by the City of Jersey City help our mature street trees thrive by adding healthy soil amendments after clearing debris from planting sites, and surrounding sidewalks and streets. Street trees are absolutely essential in protecting cities like ours from the impacts of climate change. They clean the air we breathe, slow down cars, and even absorb traffic noise. They also provide shade and break cold winds, help prevent flooding and improve our communities’ physical and mental health.
Jersey City's Tree Canopy stands at an endangered level of 10.9% — our volunteers ensure our street trees can continue to thrive, and provide health benefits for our communities.
