Dear Neighbors,

On July 9th I went under the knife.  My cardiologist discovered that my Mitral Valve that had been repaired 11 years ago was leaking profusely and that I needed to have another “Valve Job”.  When the team of surgeons opened me up, they discovered that it was beyond repair.  So they replaced it.  The scheduled 2 1/2 hour surgery lasted 5 1/2 hours.

Dear friends insisted that I stay with them on Long Island so that they could supervise my recovery. When I was released back to Jersey City, they made sure that “Craig’s Care Team” was ready to go.  And they were.  My fridge was filled with food, many home-cooked meals were delivered, and friends accompanied me on my daily walks.  I was overwhelmed by kindness.

This story is about the relationships we can build if we allow them to begin. As I have discovered over the years one really good medical professional knows others. My wonderful GP introduced me to a great cardiologist who made sure that a brilliant heart surgeon did my surgery.

Here in The Van Vorst Park neighborhood we have the good fortune to establish these kinds of relationships and nurture them.  It’s something that I’m thankful for every day.

So continue to open your hearts, do a good deed every day, and always lead with kindness.

SAY NO to a HIGH RISE HOTEL

201 Newark was pushed on the Zoning Board Agenda to October 10th.  It is critical that we have people show up in person to testify against this project, so we will keep you posted as we get closer to the new date.

Bright St. Traffic Survey - Make your voice heard!

Many of you are aware of traffic problems on Bright Street between Jersey Avenue and Monmouth during school drop off and pick up times on weekdays as school buses and parents in cars crowd into the area near the school. The result is a logjam that makes it virtually impossible to get through the area and has led to conflict between individuals vying for access.

In an effort to improve this situation the VVNA has been meeting with city traffic and law enforcement officials as well as Ward F councilman Frank Gilmore and the Principles of the primary and middle schools.

The VVNA has been asked to collect feedback from the community in terms of how best to improve the situation and in particular your thoughts on making Bright Street one way either permanently or during drop off and pickup times during the week.
